Dreaming of microblogs in Drupal

Time Slot
Sat 10:15am to 11:00am (10/18/25)
Room
The Study

The very first Drupal module that I ever worked on and became a maintainer of was Social Post Facebook. Both the underlying module, Social Post, and the Facebook Graph API had undergone a few changes, meaning the module was in need of a major upgrade. I stumbled my way through it, and got the module "working".

Since then, we at Agaric have gone through several iterations of ideas about how to architect a relational microblogging system as a Drupal module, drawing much inspiration from indieweb's POSSE (Publish on your Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere) principle. To describe our particular goals in a few user stories:

  • As a content editor, I should be able to write the contents for a microblog while I am writing an article
  • As a content editor that schedules the publishing of content, I can be sure that the microblog is also published and messages are syndicated to all platforms at roughly the same time
  • As a content editor, I can create a new microblog about an article that has already been published
  • As a site-builder, I can easily set up and configure a microblog on my Drupal site
  • etc...

Working on it only every now and then for a few years, we are finally at a point where it feels like it is really taking shape, and it is now my goal to have all of the pieces working (note the lack of quotes) by the end of the year.

During this session I will share a little bit about all of the moving pieces (a handful of modules that have been developed towards this goal), and describe the state of development. While we've come up with a lot of solutions for this dream, we've still got questions. My goal for this session is to connect with others who are also working with a Drupal site that posts to social media, or with others who are just interested. I've found that there are a lot of different ways to approach this feature-set, and I know that we could all learn a thing or two from each other.

I hope to see you there! :)
